5 Year Anniversary

Hi out there,

it´s now five years since Milkyweb Astronomical Observatory Guide ist available on the net. Some 100.000 visitors have been here to look for astronomical observatories or even collegues to discuss with.

The anniversary was the reason for the relaunch of the site which now has a better navigation (I hope).

If you decide to fill in or update the questionnaire, please check if it is possible to link to us from your website.

I regret to be behind schedule with sending out maps for those who filled in the questionnaire. I try to repair this during the next weeks.

Search Observatories on the globe

I made a ObservatoryGuide-org.kmz file so that you can locate all the observatories with Google Earth as well as with NASA World Wind (thanks to the World Wind core team)

Having Google Earth installed:
    download the file
doubleclick on it so that it is opened with Google Earth
each observatory is marked on the globe
to search for a specific observatory you can either
rotate the globe and zoom as usual, or
look for the observatory in the alphabetical list on the left
if you doubleclick on the name, the globe will show you the observatory from a distance of
            100 km

if you click on the ID, Milkyweb Astronomical Observatory Guide will open to show you
            further details

Having NASA World Wind installed:
    download the file
    start NASA World Wind
select file -> load kmz file
    then same as above

Get the map

New version of the map with screen resolution of 2400x1200 pixel is available now. I already have a second one at a resolution of 6000x3000 pixel, which I want to give out free of charge for those, who complete/revise the questionnaire of their observatory (To see a part of this map click here).

To get the map with resolution 6000x3000, you should

select your appropriate language by clicking on one of the flags above

select the questionnaire on the left

fill in your answers to the questions to complete the questionnaire

click on the "Send"-Button

send me an email.

I then will have a look at your description to see if they are complete/correct. Typically mistakes are:

to forget the "http://" in front of your URL so that the link doesn´t work with my php-script

to give the geografical coordinates as xx° yy' zz'' with the addition "W" or "E" or "N" or "S" instead of +/- xx.yyyy ("+" indicates "N" or "E", "-" indicates "S" or "W"), so that neither the "sky view", nor the "surroundings map" will work.

If your description is correct and complete, I send you an url where you will find the map with resolution 6000x3000 pixel as *.jpg for download (file size about 1.600 kB).
